Messrs.’ Harris, Nixon and Flower have been trying to hide their secret weapons secret. One of those secret weapons is Gracie Leo. I’ve been trying to get her to do a Jellybean for 3 years but she kept slipping away. I tried to stop myself taking offence. In Dublin I finally got her to sit down with me. I tried to stop her sitting on the fence. (It wasn’t that easy.)
The story goes that Gracie was doing a TEDmed talk as a medical student and met up with the SMACC leadership. They knew a good thing when they saw it and for the last 3-4 years Gracie has been one of the team that brings SMACC to life.
Gracie describes it as a family. If my family is anything to go by that would mean epic late night pouring out of hearts and a few massive fall outs.
I asked her the tough questions. Are they really horrible? Is it slave labour? Apparently Oli Flower is very nice and she tells me Roger is nice too. (I note there was no retort on Nixons jokes.) She may or may not have had media training but I didn’t get any big dirt. (Es tut mir leid.)
Like every jellybean subject Gracies talents go beyond being a medic. Design is but one of her areas of interest. In fact Dr Leo feels FOAMed types have an ethical responsibility not to offend our design sensibilities or at least not to screw up a good presentation/blog/podcast by making it look so dull/ugly/confusing that we didn’t get the little pearls that are contained therein.
Indeed design has been a feature of SMACC since the start and now SMACCbyte has become a way for creative types to express themselves. And maybe get a free ticket!
I’ll see you in Berlin.
