Potassium Chloride

Deliberate self-poisoning by ingestion of potassium chloride is rare but can result in life-threatening hyperkalaemia and cardiac arrest. The principal preparation of concern is slow-release potassium chloride, which is available in bottles of 100 tablets without prescription.  A good outcome depends on early risk assessment, gastrointestinal decontamination and haemodialysis where indicated.
