Introducing EB Medicine

As if an introduction is needed.

If you’re a doctor working in emergency medicine, chances are that you’re familiar with EB Medicine. They are the US-based publishers of Emergency Medicine Practice, which delivers a state-of-the-art practical review of a core emergency medicine topic on a monthly basis.

The BIG news is that the Life in the Fast Lane team are going to feature each month’s newly published article in a post that highlights what’s on offer and emphasizes the key learning points that emergency medicine doctors simply need to know.

But first — for those of you that have been away with the UCEM World Tour in Mongolia or have been out of the loop for some other reason — here’s some more information about EB Medicine and their publications.

What is EB Medicine?

EB Medicine publishes a range of articles each month related to emergency medicine with the goal of improving patient care, and making information access for clinicians very easy, concise, and up to date. Subscription is required to access these articles and can be purchased individually or through your institution, although residents and students in the US can get free access here. For updates from EB Medicine, follow them on Twitter.

What is Emergency Medicine Practice?

  • Emergency Medicine Practice is an evidence-based monthly print and online publication designed to help emergency clinicians improve patient care. Each month’s new topic is comprehensively reviewed. Articles typically start with a case study, then summarises the relevant underlying anatomy and pathophysiology, before detailing prehospital care and the emergency department evaluation of the conditions, as well as reviewing the key controversies and medico-legal pitfalls. The topics are diverse — ranging from this month’s subject, ‘Common Ear Complaints in the Emergency Department’, to past topics like ‘Critical Care Monitoring in the Emergency Department’ (July 2007 – free article), ‘Complications In Pregnancy Part I: Early Pregnancy’ (June 2007 – free article)

What is Paediatric Emergency Medicine Practice?

  • Paediatric Emergency Medicine Practice is the sister publication that does for paediatrics what Emergency Medicine Practice does for big people. Check out ‘An Evidence-Based Approach To The Evaluation And Treatment Of Pharyngitis In Children’ (June 2007 — free article) as an example.

What is EM Practice Guideline Updates?

  • EM Practice Guidelines Update is a new online publication that aims to keep the busy clinician up-to-date with relevant Clinical Policies and Practice Guidelines. It is free to Emergency Medicine Practice subscribers.

What is LLSA Study Guides?

  • LLSA stands for ‘Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment and consists of a reading list of recent articles that form the basis of the American Board of Emergency Medicine’s Emergency Medicine Continuous Certification (EMCC). EB Medicine’s LLSA Study Guides include full article reprints, summaries and key points for each article, an in-depth discussion, sample questions with answers and explanations, and a critique of each article that answers the question, “What does this article really tell us?”

Look out for an upcoming post featuring the “Evaluation and Treatment of Common Ear Complaints in the Emergency Department” from Emergency Medicine Practice in the near future…

Conflict of interest statement:

EB Medicine are kindly providing us with each month’s new article for review purposes. Members of the Life in the Fast Lane team have no financial (or other) involvement in EB Medicine.
