We Feel The Pressure

Sometimes frustration can set in whilst working in Emergency Departments overwhelmed with patients and with monthly 3% efficiency cuts. Thankfully I work in an environment where the staff are thick-skinned, resourceful and resilient. They utilise many emotional defense strategies ranging from writing satire (UCEM) through to drinking heavily and lyrically lamenting.

Presented here for your aural pleasure is ‘We Feel The Pressure‘ by our very own Ed Schaefer of Anticholinergic Daddy fame…just click the audio button above, sit back and feel the love wash over you.

WE FEEL THE PRESSURE – Ed Schaefer

This is a song for all the people,
Who work so hard, day in day out at Charlie Gairdner’s ED
You’re very special people and this song’s for you,
There is no winter, statistically,
Speaking baby, it’s always winter here at Charlies, Charlies ED,
Patient numbers they creep on up the graph,
And they’re coming in in droves when you thought you’d seen the last,
Patient in Perth,
Let alone half the earth,
So strap on your special smile
And dance this dance with me

We feel the pressure while the patients feel the pain,
The triage bell it tolls and we do it all again,
We do it all again.

Overcrowded, underfunded, overworked and I think that you’re underpaid,
But think of all the karma points from the lives you’ve saved,
You’re healing the community, at Charlies ED,
Just tell me I do not know why it always has to be,
So bloody busy,
Panadol propanolol metoprolol overdoses oh man you know you’ve seen it all
Fractures and insanity, and sex toys disappearing into bodily cavities.

We feel the pressure while the patients feel the pain,
The triage bell it tolls and we do it all again,
We do it all again.

You’ve got front row tickets in the theatre of humanity,
You’ve got access passes and you know that you have heard your fair share of profanity,
You wish that you could close the doors but I know there’s a hundred more out there waiting for a triage score,
So man strap on that smile, c’mon raise your glass, and dance this dance with me.

We feel the pressure while the patients feel the pain,
The triage bell it tolls and we do it all again,
We do it all again.

This is not a drill, this is an emergency,
An emergency department,
And tonight it’s a department you should all be very proud of,
Celebrate tonight, raise your glasses,
You’re very special people doing all the work you do,
Down at Charlies ED.
