b.Outline wound closure in this patient.(50%)

Answer

FACEM VAQ Exam 2004.1 – Question 4

  • Overall pass rate for this question was 54 / 69 (78.3%)
  • A photograph shows a complex left upper lip laceration.
  • The examiners expected that the description would state that the laceration involved the vermilion border and the orbicularis oris.
  • It was expected that the possibility of an intra-oral laceration and/or dental injuries would be mentioned.
  • The wound closure outline should have included a closure in
layers with the vermilion border given the highest priority. Better answers stated the different suture material options available.
  • It was likely that repair would need deep sedation or anaesthesia and be best preformed by a plastic surgical service.
  • Examiners found distracting answers that went into details about other injuries or NAI as these were not asked for in the question which was specifically about wound closure.
